Humankind is a learning species – gaining new perspectives is a birthright. Over the millennia and especially the last five centuries we have refined our modes of learning and invented pedagogical methodologies.

Tele-learning – employing new technologies – is  the latest contribution to the quest for effective and comprehensive learning. Preceded by the correspondence course which introduced learning across geographical boundaries, learning from tapes and using television as a medium for interaction, tele-learning is using our latest tele-communication technologies to enhance learning.

Yet online learning is in its infancy. It asks for new roles of learner and teacher and their respective responsibilities in this learning environment. The transition from a classroom in real time to an asynchronous screen environment has not been mastered. It emerges slowly and needs to be defined continuously.

Our educational system is often referred to as having remained in the “horse and buggy” stage, holding on to habitual patterns:

Learning to the test – the intake and release of memorized facts 

The instructor regarded as the information source and performance  judge

Standardized tests – as ultimate proof of learning –

These patterns will not work in the new screen environment where human interaction in the learning process is elevated to direct brain wave interactions.
