Distance Education Clearinghouse

Because of the great increase in distance education information, the Clearinghouse, maintained by the University of Wisconsin-Extension, rather than striving at reporting everything new, has become more selective in its state, national, and international news reportage - a fact that has made the Clearinghouse even better. Together with Ohio State University and Pennsylvania State University it hosts the annual 'Outreach Scholarship: Learning, Discovery, and Engagement' Conference (Last update: 8/23/2001).

Higher Education and Technology in Switzerland: this web site, supported by the Federal Office of Education and Science, the Swiss University Conference, and the University of Fribourg, includes all universities, research institutes, and government agencies which make up the Virtual Campus. Information on programs for distance education and learning is offered in French, German, and, selectively, in English. The network is not easy to navigate: it requires some knowledge of the Swiss education system; URLs change frequently, there is no order in the listing of URLs; and a good knowledge of French or German is helpful.

Described as a "small but cheerful window in the side of the Higher Education ship for purposes of illumination and enlightenment."  The Higher Education Links List (HELL) provides annotated links to information and resources for educators, researchers, graduates and others in around 100 disciplinary categories from Aeronautical Engineering to Zoology. Links are provided to Journal, Associations, booksellers, research, software, and even sites on plagiarism and student "cheat" sites. A very effective window.

First report on the history, development, and activities of a Swiss consortium of major universities conducting distance education courses. Of special interest are the evaluated results of the pilot program:

1. Students of the program scored equally well or even than those attending regular classes.
2. In these first courses the drop-out rate was higher than for regular instruction but intensified and targeted communication between students and tutors reversed this trend in subsequent courses.
3.The participants evaluated the total concept as either 'good' or 'very good'. Especially
appreciated was 'gain in study flexibility' but forr the acquisition of 'central' or 'difficult' course content the traditional classroom instruction was preferred.
4. Students suggested that up to 50% of couse requirements could be done by interactive
distance learning programs.

The National Center for Education Statistics
Distance Education in Postsecondary Institutions

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Collects data on all aspects of education, including distance education. The survey found that 1,680 institutions offered online-education courses during 1998 with 1.6 million students enrolled. Growth in both degree and certificate programs was more from the addition of new programs at institutions with online experience rather than new entrants to online learning. The Rewards of Teaching On-Line

American Historical Association, E.L. Skip Knox, January 2000. "On-line teaching is rewarding, but only if it emphasizes reading and writing; that is, if it emphasizes doing history. In a myriad of ways I have come to realize that students in most undergraduate courses don't actually do a lot of history.  On-line courses that fail to emphasize reading and writing will have all the shortcomings that live courses do. They will be impersonal. They will be more vulnerable to cheating. They will further the university-as-factory."

Teaching at Internet Distance.

A report from 16 professors (January 2000) at the University of Illinois offers a mixed view of online learning showing "both promise and peril."  It suggests that good teaching is possible online if there are low student to faculty ratios and other care taken.
