Online Writing Seminar

Description

Writing online requires its own distinct style for various reasons:

  • We are using a screen instead of paper to convey our thoughts. The human eye needs a longer time to absorb text from a screen than from a sheet of paper. We need to write economically - 50% of the word-count of its paper equivalent.
  • The written word on the screen often takes on the function of the spoken word - it intends to communicate orally and wants to be heard rather than read.
  • Anything on a screen is perceived as an image - hence, the arrangement of the written words are essential to the conveyance of their meaning.
  • The close association of the computer screen to the entertainment screen fosters expectations in the reader that is usually never expected from a book or letter: immediacy, brevity, visual appeal and content coming directly to the point.

The style questions of online writing center around the clarity of the message to be transmitted, format, the choice and arrangement of words, and the audio effect of a written word.

This seminar is an introduction to style questions of online writing with hands-on exercises and discussions. Links to in-depth information sources are provided.

The discussions will focus on four different "writing" areas: promotional, informational, academic and creative.

The seminar is intended as a forerunner of a full-length course on online writing.
